To be accurate, there are actually two rivers, the Flathead and Swan rivers supply clean fresh water to Flathead Lake year-round. Created by Ice Age glaciers, almost 30 miles long and 15 miles across at its widest point, Flathead lake is the largest natural lake in western US. A 160 mile shoreline and water covers nearly two-hundred square miles of Montana-and at 300 feet deep, you’d better restring your fishing reel with some extra line.

Whitefish is a scenic mountain resort town at the base of the Whitefish Mountain Resort on Big Mountain, on the shores of Whitefish Lake, and about 25 miles west of Glacier National Park. The many galleries, boutiques, and specialty shops of downtown Whitefish are a browser delight. This alpine village also has diverse culinary treasures with everything from Western home cooking to fine dining featuring international cuisine. Whitefish is also home to the Great Northern Brewing Co., where visitors can try the locally made brews in the tasting room.
To the north are some of the last truly wide-open spaces left on earth, and Amtrak Empire Builder takes you there. The Empire Builder is the name for this long-distance train that boards in Chicago and takes the northern route to the West Coast. Start your journey in Chicago and the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis before heading into the unspoiled country of North Dakota and Montana. While in Montana, visit Glacier National Park and Alberta, Canada Waterton Lakes National Park. Your trip continues west to Seattle, passing through the seven-mile Cascade Tunnel, forests of fir trees alongside Puget Sound. At this point in your journey, you may continue aboard the Victoria Clipper to visit the capital city of Victoria and the City of Vancouver which are located in British Columbia, Canada.
